“He who would learn to fly must first learn to stand
and walk and run and climb and dance;
one cannot fly into flying”
F. Nietzsche
Born in 1955, I began painting at the age of twenty while studying Philosophy. From this moment on, two passions overlapped and have animated all my life: the painting, forever to discover, and a love of wisdom, forever to perfect. My twenties and a part of my thirties are spent painting. At that time I was represented by the John Daniel Gallery, Queen Mary street (Montreal), until moving to Duluth street where I opened a studio. At the age of forty, my love of philosophy took the lead as I experienced the immense privilege of teaching college students in CEGEP for over twenty years. I am now retired for a bit more than two years now: “jubilación” as they say in Spanish! Painting is reclaiming greedily my full attention, it is now up to me to open space and time in order to satisfy its appetites.
Painting has always been and remains, for me, a writing that does not mislead. It reveals narrative threads that arise from the depths and that teach me about my own states of mind. It leads me more than I lead it, at least it’s been my experience to this day. When I try to impose myself it becomes stubbornly silent, deaf to all implorations that summon it to appear inside any grasping idea. We have been walking side by side, painting and I, for more than forty years and, as in any relationship, I may criticize it, judge it, move away from it and, as in any relationship, it is turning out to be a magnificent guide for life.
I identify well, through these many years, the variety of the interior landscapes, as well as the nature of the questions that came along with these different excavations. From the vital force of the twenties where all hopes are allowed, in spite of its inevitable setbacks, to the sadder landscapes of the thirties and forties that seek to understand the meaning of the journey, here I am today exploring bright places, no longer carried by the hope of what could be, but instead rooted in the growing joy of what is already there.
Thank you for looking into my work. I hope to continue the conversation in person.
